If you live in or around the Inland Empire, consider taking a cruise over to San Bernardino one weekend. Nestled on historic Route 66, the city offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors of all ages.
The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art
The museum regularly features different exhibitions throughout the year. Some examples of recent exhibits include the 48th Annual Student Art Exhibition and Journey to Beyond: Ancient Egyptians in the Pursuit of Eternity. General admission to the museum is free but there is a suggested $3 donation, and parking is $6 (cash only.) Their regular museum hours are Monday – Wednesday 10 AM – 5 PM, Thursday 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Saturday from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and they are closed on Friday and Saturday. Contact them about scheduling a tour or school visit as well!
San Bernardino History and Railroad Museum
This fun and historical museum features everything you could think of that relates to the railroad. They have Santa Fe Western Archives, unique artifacts, and literally hundreds of historic photographs. Come in to see a 1910 recreated railroad station including period-specific office equipment, an 1890 Fire Department Hose Wagon, a Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) Machine, and much more. The museum is open on Wednesday from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
Glen Helen Regional Park
Glen Helen is great for both relaxing at a campsite with family and friends and letting the kids run around and enjoy all of the outdoor amenities in a beautiful landscape. It’s located at the base of the hills of the Cajon Pass and has stunning views of both the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains. There are 1,340 acres of land for all kinds of recreational activities including two fishing lakes, a swim complex with a pool, sandy area, water slides, zero depth water play park, and group picnic shelters. Park hours are 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
California Theater of the Performing Arts
This theater is full of history and character. It was built in 1928 as a vaudeville movie palace, and it currently holds 1,718 seats. Theater performances, musical, plays, symphonies, celebrity headliners, children’s theater, ballets, recitals, fashion shows, and more all grace the sate of the theater regularly. Along with showcasing all of these wonderful performances, the theater also offers volunteer and internship opportunities.
Rendezvous Back to Route 66
This annual October event is a favorite of all the locals. You can expect to see over 1,000 custom vintage vehicles rolling down the streets, revving their engines and showing off all of the hard work the owners have put into restoring them. There will be great music, delicious food and beverages, and fun for the whole family. It’s a great way to get out and spend quality time with other Inland residents. The borders of the event are “E” Street to the West, 5th Street to the North, Arrowhead to the East, and 2nd Street to the South.
